Ghacks Christmas Giveaway: WinSnap And WindowSpace

December 23rd, 2008

Only three days left before the first Ghacks Christmas Giveaway ends. We have got two software programs and five licenses for each today. WinSnap and WindowSpace are both developed by NTwind who are known for their free Taskswitch XP application.

WinSnap is also known as the Windows Snapshot Maker, a screenshot application that is available as both a portable and regular edition for 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Microsoft Windows. It provides the usual means to take a snapshot of the full desktop, an application, a window, object or region. The option to take a snapshot of an object might require some explanation. This option makes it possible to take a screenshot of several elements on the screen. Say you have two open windows on the screen and want to include both in the screenshot but not the rest of the desktop. This can be done by selecting the Object mode which makes use of the [CTRL] key to mark several objects before the screenshot is taken.

A new screenshot will be displayed in the main interface of the software program. It can also be set to be automatically saved to the computer’s hard drive or copied to the Windows Clipboard which can save quite some time if you take screenshots regularly. The filename, image format and quality can also be defined in the options. The defaults are the png image format with a quality setting of 85%.

Subtitle Download

December 19th, 2008

Subtitles are great if you want to view a movie that has not been yet released in a language that you understand to enjoy the movie. Can be useful for example for users who like to watch Japanese anime, French Noir or Swedish telenovelas.

Download Divx Subtitles is just one software that can be used to search for and download subtitles. It is using the database of the popular subtitle website GetSubtitle. The database contains subtitles for movies and television series in various formats such as srt or sub which are supported by various media players.

The search is probably the easiest way to search for subtitles as it reduces the hits tremendously. The search results can be filtered by language and format. The releases are listed by language, format, data and number of CDs. There is however no information about the total playing time which could mean that you have to test various subtitles before finding the right one.

Ghacks Christmas Giveaway: FinePrint

December 19th, 2008

Five days to go before the Ghacks Christmas Giveaway ends. We have given away lots of licenses to many popular software programs and today’s program is no exception to that rule. FinePrint is a printing software that can be used to manage print jobs before they are send to an actual printer on the computer system. It is basically a tool to reduce paper and ink usage on a computer system without reducing the quality of the prints.

If you regularly print out websites or documents you must have noticed that they do not fit perfectly on paper all the time. Websites are usually to large to fit correctly on paper which will move some elements - usually those on the right side that do not fit on the print - to a second paper. This could leave you with menus that will be printed on their own paper, something that is not normally needed at all.

FinePrint offers ways to deal with those pages and a few additional features that make it an interesting software for everyone who prints out those documents regularly.

Close Inactive Tasks

December 19th, 2008

Just Close Some Tasks is an entry to the NANY 2009 Challenge over at Donation Coder. NANY stands for New Apps for a New Year. Members of the Donation Coder website create all kinds of applications for that day and it is usually lots of fun to see what they have created.

It is possible to get a sneak peak as some of the coders have already posted a few applications that they are working on. One interesting application is Just Close Some Tasks by Justice. This software program is especially helpful for users who tend to open many programs and forget to close them when they are no longer needed.

Just Close Some Tasks is a portable software that will keep track of all open applications and the time they have not been active. It will automatically mark tasks for closing that have not been active for a certain period in time. The time can be defined in the program’s options, the default value is 360 seconds. The program has been programmed to learn over time and adjust the expiry time automatically to fit the user’s needs.

Use Additional Input Devices On One Computer

December 19th, 2008

Hooking up additional input devices like keyboards, mice or tablets might not be as popular as using one set of input devices on multiple computers but it is still something that is requested quite frequently. Why would someone want to do this? There are actually a few reasons why this might be desirable. The most obvious reason is the ability to connect whiteboards, tablets alongside the usual keyboard and mouse combination. It could also be interesting for presentations where every user would get his own input device or situations that require more or less precision. Think of a gaming keyboard / mouse and a work keyboard / mouse combination.

One of the most popular solutions is the Teamplayer software by Wunderworks which is free to use for non-commercial uses. It can be used by up to three users on the same computer which means that each of them would be able to control a mouse and keyboard independently of each other. The collaborative software can be installed on computer systems running Windows XP and Windows Vista.

Each mouse pointer will be visualized by a small color dot so that they can be distinguished from each other. This is obviously not possible for the keyboard as the input will always be at the same location on the computer screen. The software does not have to be configured in any way. It places an icon in the System Tray which can be used to turn it off once it is not needed anymore.

Network Security Software Bothunter

December 18th, 2008

Bot networks are still a huge threat on the Internet. They are usually established with the use of computer worms that exploit old and new security vulnerabilities. A network security software like Bothunter can be helpful in determining if a computer network has been compromised. It does so by analysing the communication in the local network.

The software has been designed to discover communication patterns that are typical for malware infected computers. While Bothunter has been designed as a network security software that can analyze the traffic of the network it can also be used to analyze a single computer or basic home network.

Bothunter is supplied as a Linux or Windows version. The Linux version comes as a installation but also in form of a live CD that can be used from any computer that is capable of booting from CD and compatible with Ubuntu Linux.
